If you ask most teenage girls if they would like to wrestle, you will get a definite “No”. If however; you ask them if they want to play a bunch of fun games in the multi-purpose room, they will say “Yes”!
Wrestling games are great for working on cardiovascular endurance, strength, flexibility, balance, and agility. Many of the games are also great for team-building, and I have found that many students leave the class feeling more confident. You also don’t need any equipment besides a large mat with a circle on it (wrestling, cheerleading, etc.). Some students may be a bit weary at first of the close proximity to others, but as long as you establish your ground rules and everyone feels safe, there shouldn’t be a problem.
The following lesson plan is a compilation of many wrestling warm-ups and games. Choose a few that you think will be fun and try it out with your class. If they enjoy it as much as I think they will, you will have enough activities for another lesson or two.
